3D CFD Dispersion, Fire & Explosion

With the rise of safety concerns, accidental leaks, fires and explosion assessments are some of the core elements in designing multi-million-dollar facilities offshore. In order to make more informed decisions on the implications of these accidents, 3D CFD modelling is now increasingly in demand by the industry to allow improvement towards inherently safer designs; i.e. fire and blast protection requirements, which would otherwise lead to unreasonable or unjustified costs.

Our Approach

Prism’s approach is the systematic identification and assessment of each potential major accident hazard. The source terms of each hazard are defined i.e. hole size, pressure, fluid properties etc. and the frequency of occurrence of the loss of containment event is determined from historical databases. This event frequency is developed into specific outcome frequencies using event tree analysis. Finally the potential physical effects of each event are identified and modelled and the results of this modelling is assessed against impact criteria to determine the outcomes of each event.

1

Hazard Identification

Identification of initiating release events and major hazards that require further evaluation

2

Frequency & Probability Analysis

Determine the frequency of initiating events based on historical database taking into consideration the facilities’ specific details. The probability of different event outcomes occurring is estimated by event tree analysis

3

Consequence & Impact Analysis

The impact of each physical effect modelling e.g. jet fire, pool fire, fireball, explosion, etc. for each selected accidental event is calculated
